Getting Around The Country
Can you go without a car rental in Iceland? Yes! I’ve actually never rented a car, like I’ve already mentioned. I’ve relied on public bus, taxi, and hitch-hiking to get around. There’s some flights from the south up to the north.
I also walk a lot when I’m there.
However, for long-term stays, maybe consider it. For camping trips, KuKu Campers is an option. It’s a local company with – you guessed it – zany campers.
These are great for trips around the Ring Road.
When you’re in Reykjavik, or many of the small cities and towns, you can walk to coffee shops, stores, etc. Some have public transport. The bus station in Reykjavik, for instance, is Lækjartorg Bus Stop.
If you get confused about finding routes, check out one of the many little tourist shops in any of the downtown visitor centers. They can direct you to where you need to be.
I personally love walking around the city. There are a lot of murals and neat houses to see. It can get a little hilly, but nothing unmanageable. In the winter though, make sure you have some boots with tred.
