This week’s post, featuring Laura Sue of ContemporaryEarthArt, was so fascinating for me. When I was young, drawing and painting were creative outlets for me. After speaking to Laura, I’m anxious to start again.  She’s a wonderful artist and philanthropist. Check out her artwork on her Etsy store, ContemporaryEarthArt. She was gracious enough to offer two prints to give away to my readers, including the beautiful hummingbird print I had purchased for myself!

Read all about Laura Sue and her artwork below:

M: Tell me more about your art- what inspires you, how you got started:

L: I’m a full time professional artist. It is now easy to admit my addiction to the arts and cannot imagine a life without painting. Although I was always artistic, I didn’t fully take the plunge towards making a living at selling my art until 2005, since then I have been very fortunate.

I have wonderful, beautiful collectors who have touched me on a personal level, my art agent is a gem who encourages my new ideas and also the good fortune to have my art on a couple television shows; Selling New York on HGTV and Better With You on ABC.

Texture and color are my emphasis ~ I love earthy, raw and uncomplicated. I am a student of the less is more school of thought ~ our modern world is so busy and hectic that sometimes pure imagery and undiluted color can breathe life back into a tired soul.

M: Who are your favorite artists?

L: My favorite artists are Homer, Picasso and Degrassi. ~ I love to donate art to schools and environmental causes.

M: What advice do you have for other people looking to monetize (make money) from their passion/creativity:

L: I am thankful for the internet ~ it has opened a world for artists to show their work to audiences that may have never seen their work. When I first started pursuing my career as an artist I was conventional in showing at galleries, booking the shows and looking for opportunities within the strict confines of the business end of the art world. Now, I am able to spend more time painting, connecting with collectors and exploring new artistic avenues ~ I just got a welder:) I would encourage artists who are interested in taking the next step with their art to focus on building an online presence.
