Iceland can be really expensive if you’re not careful. However, there’s some really affordable or free things to do here and there.
Harpa Conference Center
Harpa is a gorgeous building made of geometric windows. It was one of the first things I saw in Reykjavik, and it’s a really popular place for tourists. There’s also a lot of concerts and shows there.
It’s perfect to just walk around on rainy days, with a cup of coffee. Gaze. Take pictures. It’s probably more of a quick 30 min to an hour thing, but it’s free, and absolutely spectacular to behold.
Hallgrímskirkja
Hallgrímskirkja is a giant sand castle like church in Reyjkavik. It’s visible from nearly anywhere in the city. You can head up there for free and walk around the first level of the church, or take the elevator to the top. This costs 1000 ISK for adults, and you can buy tickets at the church when they’re open.
There is a daily time the tours stop, so it’s ideal to get there before 18:00 to ensure you can get up there. If you don’t, it’s not a huge deal – I’ve always enjoyed lighting a candle and spending quiet time in a pew.
The Icelandic Phallological Museum
Yes, there’s a penis museum in Reykjavik. It was pretty funny but also super gross. A lot of dicks in jars, about 280 penises and some crude poetry. I’m not sure if I’d recommend it, but it’s definitely one way to spend an afternoon.
The tickets are around $15 USD, but you should account for $20 so you can buy a drink after at a nearby bar.
