Expect a lot of seafood, bread, and soup. It’s all fantastic, and the sushi is amazeballs. Do keep in mind that whenever you go out to eat, it will be a touch pricer than you expect.
They do have fast food/coffee options, but sit down service tends to be pricey.
Gamla/Old Island
Gamla/Old Island is a great, cozy restaurant with authentic Icelandic food. There’s not a huge menu, but there’s wine, beer, and a lot of home cooked food.
Kex Hostel
It’s a hostel, but also a bar. They have events there most weekends. The food is really great, and the bar/lobby area is perfect for just hanging out and listening to music, whatnot. I would definitely, strongly recommend you go there, even just for a drink.
Bónus
Bónus is a grocery store, I call it Bónus Pig because of the crazy looking logo (it’s a cross eyed pig). If you want to grab an essential, they have a lot of easy things to make for dinner, and pretty much like any other grocery store.
The Big Lebowski Bar
If you want to get drunk and make friends, go to this bar. They have a beer wheel (like wheel of fortune) where you can win free drinks. It’s a favorite to locals and visitors alike.
I have gotten very drunk there.
The Whole Fermented Shark Thing
There isn’t a specific place I’d recommend getting fermented shark. My friend Cat up in Blönduós made me for me the first time. The second time I had it, it was at a restaurant called Íslenski Barinn in downtown Reykjavik. Worth mentioning that they also have salted cod and langoustine dogs to try.
Overall, Cat’s shark was better. I think she just got it from a grocery store. It’s up to you – just make sure you have some Brennavin to wash it all down.
Here’s a video of me wolfing some down, back when I was doing GoHardAbroad with MikeKelsey.com (Update: I think his domain expired.)
Entertaining to say the least.
